Your Dog's First Visit to a Private Field: Tips for a Great Experience

A little preparation goes a long way. Here's how to set up your dog's first private field session for success.

Before You Go

  • āœ… Read the booking confirmation carefully — note access code, parking, and field rules
  • āœ… Bring high-value treats — a new environment is a great training opportunity
  • āœ… Bring water if the listing doesn't confirm it's provided
  • āœ… Don't feed a big meal immediately before a session

Using the Double Gate

  • Enter through the outer gate and close it fully behind you
  • Let your dog settle in the holding area — sniff, look around
  • Confirm the outer gate is latched, then open the inner gate
  • Only release your dog once fully inside with both gates secured

First Minutes Inside

Resist the urge to immediately throw a ball. Let your dog decompress first — walk slowly, let them sniff, match your energy to theirs. Only drop the lead once they've settled naturally.

For Nervous or Reactive Dogs

  • The goal for a first session might simply be "dog relaxes enough to sniff independently"
  • Keep the first session shorter — 30–45 minutes
  • End on a positive note before any signs of stress escalate
  • The second and third visits will be noticeably better

Leaving Well

Put the lead back on before opening the inner gate. Exit through the double gate closing both securely. Leave a review — it takes two minutes and makes a real difference to the host.
