The Best Enrichment Activities for Dogs at Home

Enrichment is anything that engages your dog's senses, brain, and natural instincts beyond their basic routine. Here are the best home options — most cost almost nothing.

Snuffle Mats

Hide kibble or treats in the fabric strips and let your dog sniff every piece out. Taps into their most powerful sense and tires them mentally in minutes. Buy for Ā£15–£30 or make one yourself.

Lick Mats

Spread peanut butter (xylitol-free), cream cheese, or wet food across a textured mat. Licking is naturally calming — it triggers endorphin release and reduces stress. Brilliant before a vet visit or during fireworks.

Frozen Kongs

Stuff a Classic Kong with wet food, kibble soaked in broth, and freeze overnight. Keeps dogs occupied for 20–40 minutes and works the jaw, brain, and patience simultaneously.

Hide and Seek (Treats)

Hide treats around the house or garden and release your dog to find them. Engages scent tracking powerfully and tires dogs faster than most physical exercise.

Training as Enrichment

Five minutes of teaching a new trick is mentally tiring in a way most owners underestimate. Anything that requires the dog to think and engage counts as enrichment.
