How to Use a Secure Dog Field to Improve Your Dog's Recall

Recall is the single most important command a dog can learn. And yet it's the one most owners struggle with most β€” because real recall can only be properly trained in an environment where the dog is free to fail safely. That means a secure enclosed space.

Why Recall Is Hard to Train in Public

In a public park, if your dog doesn't come back, the consequences can be serious. That pressure makes most owners call their dog less, manage more with the lead, and miss the repetitions that build reliable recall. You can't build recall without practice, and you can't practice properly without safety.

The Private Field Advantage

In a secure field, there are no consequences to a failed recall. Your dog can run away, ignore you, or choose the interesting smell over coming back β€” and nothing bad happens. This gives you the freedom to practise at full distance, in full distraction, and build up the repetitions that create genuine reliability.

A Simple Recall Training Session Structure

Warm-Up (5 minutes)

Reward engagement and check-ins. Throw a few easy recalls from short distances. Get the dog working with you, not independently.

Main Session (15–20 minutes)

  • Wait for your dog to move away and become engaged in something
  • Call once β€” not repeatedly
  • When they arrive, make it a party. Big rewards, genuine excitement
  • Release them back to what they were doing β€” recall shouldn't mean end of fun
  • Gradually increase distance and level of distraction they're pulled away from

End on High (5 minutes)

Finish with your dog's favourite game. Leave them wanting more. Next session, they'll be keen.

What Not to Do

  • Never call your dog to you and then immediately end the session or do something they dislike
  • Never scold a dog that eventually comes back, however long it took
  • Never repeat the command β€” one clear recall cue, then wait
⚠️ Please Note: All dogs vary. For dogs with significant recall issues, work with a qualified trainer. SnoopPaws does not provide training advice.
