How to Teach Your Dog Recall From Scratch

A reliable recall — your dog coming back when called, every time — is the single most important thing you can teach. Here's how to build it properly.

Why Recall Is Hard

Recall fails because the outside world is more rewarding than coming back. The fix isn't to shout louder — it's to make returning to you so consistently rewarding that it becomes your dog's default response.

Step 1: One Word, Used Once

Pick one recall word — "come" or your dog's name — and use only that, said once, calmly. Repeating teaches dogs to ignore the first few cues.

Step 2: Start Indoors

Zero distractions. Say your recall word once, then run away enthusiastically. When they reach you, reward with your best treats and genuine excitement. 5–10 repetitions, then stop.

Step 3: Private Field

A secure dog field is the essential step between home and public spaces. Your dog is genuinely off-lead, no consequences for a failed recall, real distance possible. This is where proper recall gets built.

  • Wait until your dog is sniffing independently
  • Call once, then run in the opposite direction
  • When they arrive — massive reward, genuine excitement
  • Never call your dog to do something they dislike
  • Never scold a dog that eventually returns
