How to Teach Your Dog Loose Lead Walking Step by Step

Loose lead walking — your dog walking calmly beside you without pulling — transforms every walk from a battle into a pleasure. Here's how to teach it properly.

The Foundation: You Control Forward Movement

The golden rule is simple: a tight lead means no forward movement. Your dog learns that pulling never gets them anywhere — only a loose lead does.

Starting Position

Decide which side you want your dog to walk on and be consistent. Have treats in the hand on that side. Your dog's shoulder should be roughly level with your leg.

The Method

  • Start walking. The moment the lead tightens — stop dead
  • Wait for the lead to slacken (the dog looks back, takes a step toward you, or simply stops pulling)
  • The instant there's slack — say "yes" and start walking again
  • Frequently reward your dog for being in the correct position while walking — don't just reward stops

Progress Slowly

Start in a low-distraction environment — your garden, a quiet street. Only move to busier environments once loose lead walking is reliable at home. A private field is excellent for practising position work in a larger space before tackling public pavements.

Be Patient

Loose lead walking takes weeks of consistent practice to become reliable. Every walk is a training session. If you're in a hurry, use a harness and don't train that day — practising pulling is worse than not training at all.
