How to Stop Your Dog Jumping Up at People

Jumping up is one of the most common complaints dog owners have — and one of the most easily fixed with the right approach. Here's how.

Why Dogs Jump Up

Jumping up is a natural greeting behaviour — puppies jump up to reach their mother's face. It's also almost always inadvertently rewarded by owners. Even pushing a dog away or saying "no" counts as attention, which is exactly what the dog wanted.

The Core Principle: Ignore the Jump, Reward the Calm

The only response to jumping that works consistently is complete removal of attention:

  • The moment your dog jumps — turn away completely, cross your arms, say nothing
  • The moment all four paws hit the floor — calmly reward with attention or a treat
  • If they jump again — turn away again immediately
  • Repeat every single time without exception

Consistency Is Non-Negotiable

Every person your dog interacts with must apply the same response. One family member who lets the dog jump "just this once" teaches the dog that jumping sometimes works — which makes it harder to extinguish than if it always worked.

Teach an Incompatible Behaviour

Train a solid sit as the greeting behaviour. Ask for a sit before anyone gives attention. A dog can't sit and jump simultaneously — you're replacing the unwanted behaviour with a wanted one.

Visitors

Brief visitors before they enter: "Please ignore him completely if he jumps — turn away and wait for four paws on the floor." Most people are happy to help once they understand.
