How to Choose the Right Dog Walking Field for Your Dog

The right field for a nervous rescue greyhound is very different from the right field for a three-year-old Labrador. Here's how to match your dog's needs to the right field.

Consider Your Dog's Size

  • Small breeds — check the mesh is fine enough to prevent escape
  • Large breeds — look for fencing at least 1.8–2 metres high
  • Very active breeds — go bigger on field size. One acre+ is far more satisfying for a dog that wants to run

Consider Temperament

Nervous or Anxious Dogs

Look for fields in quieter, rural locations away from roads and foot traffic. A field that borders a busy road may not be the calm environment your dog needs.

Reactive Dogs

Double gate airlock is essential. Consider fields with solid rather than mesh fencing so reactive dogs can't see and react to things outside the perimeter.

Sighthounds and High-Drive Breeds

Prioritise size and length. Greyhounds and Whippets need a long straight run — a long rectangular field beats a small square one every time.

Check the Surface

Is the surface level? Well-drained? For dogs with joint issues or recovering from injury, level, well-maintained grass is preferable.

Try Before You Commit

Book a single session rather than multiple sessions in advance until you know your dog loves a particular field. Most dogs settle into a favourite quickly.
