How to Build a Strong Bond With Your Dog
The bond between a dog and their owner is one of the most studied relationships in animal behaviour β and one of the most rewarding to build intentionally.
Why the Bond Matters
A strong bond isn't just emotionally satisfying β it makes everything easier. Dogs with strong human bonds are more trainable, more confident, and show lower rates of anxiety and behavioural problems.
Shared Activities Build the Bond
Any positive shared experience strengthens the relationship. Training, walking, playing, grooming β the key is being genuinely present rather than distracted. Quality attention matters more than quantity of time.
Training as Bonding
Positive reinforcement training is one of the most powerful bonding tools available. It requires your dog to focus on you, builds a communication channel, and creates strong positive associations with your presence.
Quality Off-Lead Time
A dog that runs freely in your presence and voluntarily returns to you is building a powerful positive association with being near you. Private dog field sessions β where your dog runs free but naturally checks back in throughout β are excellent for this.
For New Rescues
With a newly rehomed dog, don't rush the bond. Provide safety, routine, and positive experiences without pressure. Many rescue dogs take weeks or months to fully relax β and the bond that forms after that process is often exceptionally strong.
