Bringing Children to a Private Dog Field: Safety Tips for Families

A private dog field can be a wonderful family experience β€” the whole family plus the family dog in a safe enclosed space, with no stress and no strangers. A little preparation makes it brilliant. Here's what parents should know.

Brief Children Before You Arrive

Children who understand the rules before they get to the field are much safer and have a better time than those who are managed reactively once they're excited. Key briefing points:

  • We do not run through the gates β€” always walk calmly with the dog on the lead through both gates
  • We don't chase the dog β€” this triggers prey behaviour in some dogs and can cause accidental jumping or nipping
  • If the dog jumps up, we stand still like a tree β€” don't scream or run
  • We don't pull the dog's ears, tail, or disturb them when they're eating or drinking
  • One adult is always watching the dog

Manage the Double Gate Carefully

The double gate is the most critical safety moment of any field visit, and it's more complex with children. Establish a rule: all children stand still, away from the gate, while an adult manages both gates and the dog. Only when both gates are secured does anyone move.

Age-Appropriate Interaction

Young children and dogs can have wonderful interactions, but they need managing:

  • Teach children to let the dog come to them rather than rushing towards it
  • Supervise physical contact β€” children should pet dogs gently, not roughly
  • Watch for dog body language signals β€” a dog that moves away, yawns repeatedly, or shows a tense body is communicating discomfort

Know Your Dog Around Children

Most family dogs are completely trustworthy with children they know. Be more cautious with dogs that have no or limited experience with children, or any dog that has shown discomfort around children previously.

⚠️ Please Note: No dog interaction is completely risk-free. Adult supervision of children with dogs is essential at all times. Never leave children unsupervised with any dog regardless of its history. SnoopPaws does not provide child safety or veterinary advice.
